The Getty Images Black History & Culture Collection is a not-for-profit initiative. It aims to provide access to historical and cultural images of the African/Black Diaspora in the US and UK. The collection is a resource for educational materials. It aims to deepen understanding and appreciation of Black history. This case study explores the design process and development of the logo for this significant initiative.
The Black History & Culture Collection is more than just a set of images. It's a non-profit initiative dedicated to expanding access to educational materials and fostering a deep understanding of Black history. The collection focuses on noncommercial use. It aims to inspire educational projects while honoring the diversity and heritage of the Black community.
Our design journey started with an immersive exploration of the archive collection. We dove deep into historical and cultural themes. We meticulously researched archival materials. We found a wealth of visual motifs and storytelling elements. These would shape our design approach.
We made our design process fun and lively, inspired by the brand's charm. The goal was to create a logo that sparked curiosity, symbolizing the uncovering of hidden truths. Adding strikethroughs focused attention on the elements being uncovered.
We dug into historical themes for the Black History & Culture Collection. Our focus was on capturing its essence. After several tries and tweaks, we had refined a design that truly celebrated the collection's spirit.
Our collaboration with Getty Images was key. Their feedback, along with the client's, guided us towards a brilliant design. Each tweak made the logo better reflect the collection's aims and values.
Our creative work culminated in an identity. It embodies the essence of uncovering hidden things. The identity uses design choices in colour, typography, and texture. They evoke notions of an archive and history, paying homage to the rich cultural tapestry it represents. A version of the logo doubles as a frame for social media, extending the reach and impact of the collection across digital platforms. While the incorporation of strike-throughs symbolizes the act of uncovering hidden narratives.
Upon unveiling the final logo, Getty Images and stakeholders provided feedback. It was overwhelmingly positive, which affirmed the design's resonance and impact. The logo's versatility is highlighted by how well it works across various digital platforms. The animated version added a captivating dimension to its story.
We are proud to have contributed to this worthwhile project. We made the Getty Images' Black History & Culture Collection identity with passion and creativity. We also felt a strong sense of purpose. By adding our friendly and vibrant style to the logo, we created a visual identity. This identity not only resonates with audiences but also stands as a symbol of empowerment and celebration. Looking back, we are proud to have helped amplify Black voices and stories.
